How to Store Cigars Properly (And Why It Matters)

Why Humidity Is Important

Cigars are made from natural tobacco leaves. Like any natural material, they react to their environment.

If a cigar becomes too dry, it will burn too quickly and taste harsh. The wrapper can crack, and the smoke can feel sharp rather than smooth.

If it’s too humid, the burn becomes uneven and the draw can feel tight. Flavours can turn flat and heavy.

Ideal Storage Conditions

For the best results, keep your cigars at around 65-72% relative humidity and 18-21°C. These conditions help maintain the natural oils in the tobacco, which is what gives you a good flavour and an even burn.

Do You Need a Humidor?

If you plan to keep cigars for more than a few days, yes.

A humidor maintains stable humidity levels and protects cigars from environmental changes. This is especially important in places like Bali and across Indonesia, where air conditioning and fluctuating temperatures can quickly dry cigars out.

If you run a lounge or retail space, humidity control is even more important. A good humidor keeps your stock in the condition it should be in when a customer picks it up.

How Long Can Cigars Be Stored?

When kept in proper conditions, cigars can last for years. In some cases, they actually get better with age.

Without controlled storage, however, cigars can lose quality surprisingly fast. Even in tropical climates, indoor environments can dry them out more quickly than expected.

Short-Term Storage and Travel

If you’re travelling with cigars or storing them for a short period, keep them in their original packaging, avoid direct sunlight, and store them somewhere cool and stable. For anything beyond a few days, humidity control is always the safer option.
